A story is placed on a Zagreb’s famous flea market Hrelic. Narrator Marija Capan discovers the market’s colorful scenes through various conversations with unique sellers and visitors from Croatia and abroad. By taking us to particular ambience of Hrelic is also experiencing a strong social dimension of this cult place.
A documentary about the most famous Zagreb’s flea market named Hrelić, starts with scenes of Zagreb in the dawn. Through the song Soul of the City it follows gathering the sellers on Hrelić during one typical fare Sunday, preparing for a busy day that lies ahead.
Narrator Marija Capan begins a story of a flea market where you can find everything you can imagine especially things you didn’t know even existed, revealing the past of the place. The number of visitors on Sundays rises up to 50 thousand, and in a short conversation with a seller she buys a bag for only 1.5 bucks.
A charming, for inexperienced visitor maybe incomprehensible dialogue of local sellers, who instead of selling merchandise, decided to spend a Sunday morning in a local cafe bar drinking beer, reveals a cheerful and humorous lifestyle on Hrelic.
Among various visitors narrator sets eyes on tourists from Argentina. In a short conversation they reveal they came to Zagreb as couch surfers and their host takes them to visit Hrelić. They are enchanted with the place, and although they haven’t seen the whole fair, they are not leaving empty handed–gladly showing what they bought.
Continuing the tour of the fair, the narrator finds a stand where a skillful seller by lowering the price persuades her to buy. Since she is satisfied with the shopping, decides it is time to take a rest and drink a cup of coffee in a local cafe.
A visitor from Norway is taking a short educational course in Zagreb. Hearing many stories of Hrelić, he visits the place for the first time not hiding his enthusiasm.
Having paid for the coffee, the narrator is taking us to the Sava’s bank where a similar, yet different story unwinds. Sellers who sell their goods without paying the fair fee, often sell personal belongings they no longer need just to survive. Frequent visitor Rehak Tulek confirms what we have seen and emphasises the importance of the Hrelic by naming it the Soul of the City.
The next stop is the Zagreb’s biggest car-fair where can be up to 25 thousand cars for sale. The car trader explains how people mostly offer land instead of cash payment as a compensation for used car and new cars are difficult to sell.
After the car fair, narrator is taking us to meet the gastronomy of Hrelic. By showing us the diverse scenes of grilled and cooked food followed by dynamic Gipsy trumpeters music, one can experience the real atmosphere of Hrelic.
The conclusion takes us behind the colorful scenes. Among the people who are fighting for everyday existence and are not fond of cameras, asking us to respect their privacy. A narrator gently reveals the social side of the place where people fight for survival presenting them as heroes, not losers as the society sees them. Hrelic – Soul of the city, barenaked.
